Napkin Gallery Wall

Yes, you read the title right, it does say napkin. Are you confused yet? For those who know me well, they won't be suprised by this confession but for those who don't, they may get a small chuckle.

Here is my confession:

I collect napkins.

Weird eh? I don't know why I do, I just do. I started when I was a little girl and I have been collecting them ever since. Whenever I attend an event, a party or just go for dinner at someone's house, I sneak a napkin into my purse. When I get home, I transfer the napkin to my plastic bin of napkins. Every once in a while, I will go through said container and take out any duplicates I may have and then count up what I am keeping. I haven't done it in close to a year but last time I counted I was at 408.

For years and years and years, they just sat in their plastic bin. I couldn't think of any good ways to display them so I just let them be and slowly kept adding to my stockpile.

About a year ago, I came up with the idea of buying some white frames and making a gallery wall. And I had the perfect thing to put into these frames: napkins! So my napkin gallery wall was created.

I LOVED it. Everytime I walked by the wall I smiled really big. I stared at my napkins and got such joy out of them.

They really made me smile.

But slowly over time, I began to lose some of my pleasure from my napkin wall. It just became another fixture in the house, something that I was used to. I would go weeks without really stopping to appreciate them. They were just there.

So I came up with a plan to enjoy them again. Swap the napkins out! I pulled out my big container of napkins and went through them all, picking out my favourites.

From there, I picked out my twelve favourites. Then I pulled all the frames off the wall and positioned them in the same layout on my table as they were on the wall.

I then played around with the napkins I had, moving them from frame to frame to frame, figuring out the best arrangement.

Once I chose the arrangement I liked, I swapped out the old napkins for the new.

Once I was pleased with the new napkin layout, I moved them all back to the wall. Where I then switched some of the frames around again. But I'm pleased with the finished product.

I'm not in love with the lighting in these pictures but I'm at work all day so I miss all the natural light. You get the idea though.

I love them all but I do have a few favourites.

I especially love the chicken.

So there you have it, my weird napkin collection. Do you collect anything out of the ordinary? If so, do you display them or keep it hidden in a box? Do you have a gallery wall? What do you think of mine?

  1. This is adorable. Fantastic idea. I always look at napkins at the dollar store and think they are so pretty, but never buy any.

I have been following you for awhile now. I am Ontarian farmer in south central Ontario.

Have a nice day. Think Spring.

  3. Very delightful! I think the next time you switch them out you should put in all the airline ones you have. ;)

  4. onesimplefarmgirl2 - Thank you. I love all the different napkins that there are out there. Although I rarely buy them myself, I just collect them from other people. :P

    Heidi - I'm glad I can make you think I'm creative. :)

Jackie - Maybe I will do that! I do have an awful lot of airline napkins, do you think I have 12?

  6. I love this. Talk about sustainable design! You recycled the napkins in the first place by saving them from the garbage. Now you are recycling them in the frames. So cool!
