Clothes Cleanse

Earlier this week, I had a really strong urge to clean out our clothes and get rid of stuff that we weren't wearing/using. It kind of came out of the blue but I'm pretty sure it was triggered by me complaining to Dan that I didn't have a shirt to wear, while wading through about 20 shirts in my shirt drawer. If that's not a hint that maybe it's time to purge, then I don't know what is.

So on Monday, I pulled my shirt drawer out of the dresser and actually went through it.

Before
Ignore the sad stripped mattress background, I was also washing all of our bedding that day.

I got rid of a whole pile of shirts, so now the drawer actually closes with ease. And really, did I need to keep 6 old stretchy dead white tank tops? I think not.

After
Once I cleaned out the shirt drawer, I moved onto pants.

Then once I got rid of some pants, I was on a roll! I systematically worked my way through all of our drawers, opting to either toss or give away a few things from each. It felt good to go through them all and actually see what was being used or not.

I took before and after pictures of each drawer, but I'm not going to bore you with them, since there are a lot. But just imagine each drawer being thinned down and looking so much better by the time I was done with it.

After
Once I finished all the drawers, I tackled the closet. I knew that there would be a bunch of clothes in there that I could get rid of. Since I'm no longer working, I don't need all those "work clothes". Plus, some of them were beyond dead but I had been stretching them out until the very end so that I wouldn't need to buy new stuff right before quitting.

Before
It felt good to go through them, like it was a final good bye to my job. I did keep a decent amount though, since I can wear them to other events and in case I need to go back to work. I mostly just got rid of dead stuff or clothes that I wasn't very fond of and never wore much anyways.

After
By the end of my purging, I felt pretty good about myself. I had two piles, one of give away and one of garbage.

Toss is on the left, give away is on the right
All in all, it was a productive day. Especially since the last two weeks have been anything but productive. Have you gone through your clothes lately? Do you do it on a regular basis (Spring/Fall) or do you wait like me until you can't close your drawer or you have "nothing to wear"? I really should do this more often...

  1. Because I have no closet and live out of a small armoire, I purge constantly! At LEAST twice a year. It is really hard to give some stuff up (like the shirt that doesnt fit, but i love, or the shirt i love that has a staint hat wont budge). but in the end it leaves room for NEW clothes, and that makes me happy. hahaha

  2. Casey - You totally inspire me to do this more often. We have enough space, which is probably why I waited so long since the last time! And I totally hear you on the favourite shirt that doesn't fit or is stained. :(

  3. I was holding onto a lot of Clothes that I wanted to keep until I would "Fit back into them." it was very relieving to let them go for me! and a clean closet is the best feeling ever!

  5. I've done this recently too! For many days afterwards I kept going back to my wardrobes and drawers just to actually 'admire' them! They were such a mess before and neither of us could ever find what we needed. The charity shops did quite well out of my 'declutter' because there was lots of stuff there that I've hardly worn!

  6. I meant to say too - I love the way it's so easy to comment on your blog!

  7. Anne - It feels so good, doesn't it? Getting out clean shirts or pants is such a breeze now, because I don't have to dig for 5 minutes before finding something I like. And yes, the charity shops will be getting a nice big bag of stuff from me.

I'm so glad you find it easy to comment on my blog! I try and keep it simple, without the "prove you're not a robot" thing because I personally hate those. But if I start getting crazy spam, I may have to make adjustments. So enjoy it while it lasts! :P

  8. I love how your clothes purging also let you firmly close the door on the "stuffy-at-work-clothes" aspect of your life! We're steadily working through our closets right now, and I find it particularly hard to let go of things I know I don't wear but are in good condition. I hope that the place we donate to makes excellent use of them!

  9. Tory - I was pretty excited to get rid of so many work clothes, it felt good. I also find it hard to let go of things that in good condition and I may possibly use at some point. Why is it so hard to let go of clothes?
