Thoughtful Thursday - July 31, 2014

I've been really loving this song lately and I thought I would share it with you guys.

And for those who can't listen to it, here are the lyrics.

Automatic by Miranda Lambert
Quarter in a payphone
Drying laundry on the line
Watching sun tea in the window
Pocket watch, tellin' time
Seems like only yesterday, I'd get a blank cassette
Record the country countdown, 'cause I couldn't buy it yet

If we drove all the way to Dallas
Just to buy an Easter dress
We'd take along a Rand McNally, stand in line to pay for gas
God knows that shifting gears ain't what it used to be
I learned to drive that '55, just like a queen three on a tree

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic

If you had something to say
You'd write it on a piece of paper
Then you put a stamp on it
And they'd get it three days later
Boys would call the girls
And girls would turn them down
Staying married was the only way to work your problems out

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic
Automatic

Let's roll the windows down
Windows with the cranks
Come on let's take a picture
The kind you gotta shake

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic, automatic

Simple Pleasures - July 2014

I very nearly forgot to do my Simple Pleasures this month. I mean, today is the last day of July so I really am cutting it close. But I did spend the last week looking around and finding small things that made my life a little happier and I'm sharing them with you today.

I now own the complete series of Friends!

The sky

New pottery bowl from a friend (with delicious cherries!)

Mia, my favourite black lab

Evening canoe ride when up visiting Dan's parents

Geocaching date with Dan

My new Fisher Price farm set
What are you thankful for this month? Any small things bring you a smile? Please share, I love spreading the cheer.

What's Growing Wednesday

Another Wednesday is upon us and my garden has shown growth since last time I shared it with you.

The pepper plants all have little mini peppers on them and I'm anxiously awaiting the change of colours and being able to actually eat them.

Despite the sad start to the carrots, they seem to be doing okay now. Although seeing this picture reminds me that I need to thin them again, before they get too big.

Our beans are a little behind since the first planting all died and we had to replant the entire two rows. But they are all in bloom so hopefully that means we will soon be eating fresh beans!

Our tomato plants are still as big as ever and beginning to fall over again. Seriously, I'm not sure how to contain them all and keep them under control. Does anyone have any tomato plant tips? Each year they turn into monsters! But the good news, the green tomatoes are starting to turn pinkish which means, fresh tomatoes soon. Which is always a happy thought.

The sad mistake we made with our garden this year is in regards to our zucchini and cucumber plants. We wanted them near the edge of the garden so they had room to branch out and grow, but we didn't think their placement through very well. They are on the wrong side of the tomatoes and consequently don't get enough sun. The poor things are stretching upwards in search of some heat rays. Oh well, lesson learned. Next year will be better.

So that is this week's update on my garden. If you have a garden, how is it doing? Are you eating much from it? I'm impatiently waiting for the first beans and tomatoes.

Hanging Some Art

When we first moved into our house, it was all of a sudden very overwhelming trying to fill up all the empty space. We didn't have enough furniture and we didn't have enough pictures to hang. There were a lot of empty walls and they drove me nuts.

Thankfully, my sister Stacey lent me some of her art to put up in the office and it has spent the last three years hanging happily on the main wall.

For the last little while though, I have been itching to change up the office a bit. In an effort to do so, I sorted, got rid of and organized a bunch of stuff n there earlier this month. In fact, that shelf to the left of the couch is on its way out, hence the emptiness of it.

I actually would really love to repaint this room, since I'm getting sick of the minty green colour that was originally chosen for the previous owners nursery, but I'm too cheap and lazy to do so right now so I'm just opting for some minor makeovers. Like this wall. So down came the pictures.

Sadly, the super sticky poster stuff I used to hang them didn't come off all that well so I was left with some peeled paint where two of the pictures had been hung.

Once I finished taking off the sticky mess, sanded down the wall a bit and repainted, you never would have known anything had been hanging there.

Now here is the part of the project where I stopped taking pictures. We were in the middle of making supper while trying to get the hooks into the wall and I just kept running in and out while Dan was doing the manual labour. So imagine Dan putting hooks into the wall.

Once the hooks were in, the string was hung and pictures were pinned up for a finished product that looked like this!

I hung up some of the kids (my nephew and nieces) art that they had given us previously and they were thrilled with it! Here they are, all standing underneath the art they did.

I'm pretty excited about my new office decor and smile every time I walk into the room. The awesome part of about it is I can change out the art whenever I feel like it. I have a whole pile of more pictures that the kids did and once I've rotated through all of those, I can switch to photographs or something. Who knows, the possibilities are endless!

Here are some close ups of some of the pictures.

It was a fun quick project to do and I'm really happy with the finished results.

Anyone else working on any projects lately? I have another one to share with you on Friday and I can't wait!

Visitors

Last week was a busy one for me, with the visit of my brother-in-law, nephew and two nieces. They arrived Monday evening in time for supper and stayed until Thursday morning. It was a wonderful visit and we had lots of fun together. I'm so glad they make the effort to come out and visit us each summer and I hope the tradition continues for a while.

Some of the fun things that we did were...

1) Painted our nails

2) Went to the zoo, had a picnic lunch and played in the splash pad

3) Coloured mandalas for a few hours

4) The boys went fishing

5) We all went for a bike ride

We also ate really good food and had fun hanging out together. Most definitely a good week!

How was everyone's weekend? Busy? Relaxing?

Five Things Friday

I'm copying Casey over at Waffling and going with an easier Friday post. It's been a crazy week here of company and exercise and I just don't have the energy to write all about it right now. So I shall save those good posts for next week and stick with Five Things Friday today.

1. Dan and I have been re-watching Friends and are a tad bit hooked on it again. We watched all 10 seasons last winter and are currently on season 7. We can't help it, it's just so funny.

2. I completed week 3 of Couch 2 5K this morning. Although I nearly died and I'm pretty sure I'll need to redo week 3 before moving on. But the important thing is, I've been getting up early and going for a run three times a week for three weeks! Go me!

3. I coloured the most beautiful mandala this week and I'm slightly in love with it. It might even get framed and put somewhere prominent in my house, that's how much I'm loving it.

4. I went for a 10km bike ride on Wednesday, my first time biking this year. Even though I thought I was going to die half way through it, I pushed myself and actually enjoyed it. I even told Dan we need to do that more often, seeing as it's good exercise and quite pleasant.

5. I got an ice cream maker this week and I can't wait to start whipping up some wonderful summer treats! It was a gift from my nephew and nieces and they were pretty darn cute giving it to me. Next time they come, I'll have to make them some ice cream as a thank you.

So that's all you get for a post this Friday, I hope you enjoyed the randomness and that you all have a wonderful weekend! See you next week!

Thoughtful Thursday - July 24, 2014

I really liked this picture that I came across on Pinterest the other day and I thought I would share it.

Summer Loving

Since this is the first summer that I am feeling good, not working and not banged up from hitting a deer, we are taking advantage of the warm months and getting out on dates.

Back in May, we were at a yard sale and came across a pair of basically new roller blades that fit me perfectly and were priced right. Dan immediately jumped on them and excitedly told me we could go roller blading together.

That was back in May and we didn't get out for our first skate until the beginning of July. So not the quickest but at least we used them in the same summer we got them!

This was my first time on roller blades since I was probably 10 years old, so I was pretty shaky and a little scared of wiping out. Hence the helmet.

Dan on the other hand, is a natural on skates.

He skated circles around me for a bit and then very kindly came and helped me get a little more comfortable on my feet. By the end of the date, I was skating by myself, doing corners and practicing stopping. Oh and did I mention we went to a deserted parking lot for my first lesson? I didn't want to risk running into anyone or embarrassing myself by wiping out in the middle of a busy path.

It was fun and we plan on getting out a few more times this summer, at least enough times to get me skating in public by the end.

The other date we took was last week and we went out for an evening canoe ride. It was the perfect time of night and the water was so calm and restful.

We paddled around among the lily pads and took short cuts through secret marshy areas.

It was super nice to spend some quiet time together enjoying nature.

We paddled along until we came to some rocks and then kept going. Which may or may not have been the best decision. It was really shallow and the current was stronger there, but we made it through.

We finally decided to turn around and then had to head back down through the rocks, this time going with the current. Which turned out to be harder than coming up, since we were going faster and couldn't steer that well. We did end up getting stuck on some rocks sideways in the river for a bit, but we eventually got free and continued on our merry way.

Once we were back to still waters, Dan wanted to do some fishing. So he cast out his line and caught this small mouth bass!

I was so impressed that he caught it on his first cast, that I opted to do some fishing too, in the hopes that I would catch something. It didn't happen. So I gave up after a few minutes and read while Dan did some more fishing.

It was a delightful evening and we are looking forward to having more nice date nights over the rest of the summer.

Anyone else doing fun activities like roller blading or fishing? Or maybe that isn't your idea of fun. What have you all been up to this summer in the entertainment area?
