Sister Bonding

Back when I was in highschool, my sister Cora went on a trip with my parents to visit extended family down in the States. While they were there, they were gifted some beautiful sweaters with a huge strawberry on the front. Cora lovingly brought one back for me and since then, they have been our "sister bonding" sweaters. When we have fun sister nights, these sweaters come out for at least one picture.

A little over a week ago, when I was in Quebec, we had one such night. And out came the sweaters.

We even found a picture from one of our very first nights of bonding, back when we both had chubby cheeks. It was pretty fun to reminisce and realize we've been doing this for almost 10 years! Unfortunately, the sweaters didn't stay on long this time since it was pretty hot in Cora's second floor apartment at the end of June.

This night of sister bonding included more than just wearing ugly sweaters, it also involved super amazing food. Cora totally outdid herself by making me gluten/dairy/corn free pizza for supper and homemade oreos for dessert!

The pizza was the best I've tasted in almost 2 years. The crust was thick and chewy instead of thin and cardboard like. It was perfect. And the oreos were divine. The perfect crunch to the cookie with the sweet filling inside. She totally wins best oreo maker award.

After stuffing ourselves with the good food, we curled up on her couch to watch a movie off Netflix. She had more tasty snacks for us but we were both so full from supper that we ended up just going to bed after the movie without eating chips and salsa. But don't worry, we got to them the next day.

In the morning, Cora made me super tasty scrambled eggs using fresh herbs from her balcony garden and we ate it on her back porch while soaking up the morning sun.

It was the perfect sister bonding time and I'm so glad that we still make time to do it. We've promised each other that no matter where we move or end up, we will make the effort to visit each other at least once a year. Whether these visits include the strawberry sweaters or not, will be up to our future selves.

Does anyone else have any silly traditions like this that they share with a sister or a close friend? Any other ugly sweaters out there that come out for special occasions?

  1. My friends and I have an inside joke called "evening eyes" from when we used to play with makeup as young girls. It basically involves ugly eyeshadow up to your eyebrows. Whenever we are getting ready to go out or helping do eachother's makeup we always joke that we are doing evening eyes- though now we ACTUALLY do the evening eyes less because no one likes to take that off!

But yes, you will often find us with terrible makeup on :)

  2. Love your ugly sweaters! You two are fun and silly and I'm glad that you are keeping up your tradition of yearly bonding time. :)

  3. Casey - I love your "evening eyes"! It's always fun having an inside joke with friends. :)

Jackie - I think you're pretty fun and silly too. :P
