I am here today to tell you about the best gluten-free bread you will ever taste. Seriously.
I first stumbled upon this bread while visiting my sister Jackie in Seattle. We were at the grocery store looking for some bread that I could eat and she picked up this loaf. I had never heard of it but figured we could give it a try. Boy am I glad we did!
I ate 2 loaves while there and imagined the day that Canada would finally have it too. Much to my delight, mid-summer I discovered a local store was carrying it. I may have squealed and done a happy dance in the frozen foods aisle right then and there. Ever since then, you can always find a loaf of Canyon Bakehouse bread in my freezer or on my counter.
For all you gluten-free bread eaters out there, I know what you're thinking. How can this bread actually be good? Well for starters, it doesn't taste like sand, so that's a bonus. It has the best texture ever and stays together in a nice normal bread way. It is soft and moist, "bouncy" in the way it should be and has a fabulous flavour. Like I said, this bread is amazing.
This bread is good for sandwiches, since it stays together and doesn't dry out by day two.
This bread is also good toasted with peanut butter (or any topping really). It makes the perfect snack for anytime during the day.
I have also enjoyed this bread with fried eggs, either for breakfast or lunch. I usually spread some Earth Balance on it before topping it with the eggs, just to give it that extra flavour and moisture. But it isn't really necessary.
I think one of the ways I was most excited to use this bread was in french toast. I haven't had french toast since before my gluten-free days since normal gluten-free breads don't hold up well for dipping in an egg mixture. But this bread? Works like a charm.
Heck, this bread is so good you don't even have to do anything to it! I eat a lot of it just plain, soaking up the joys of eating bread again.
I can't imagine life without this bread now that I've had it in my life for the last few months. It has drastically improved my eating habits and I am so thankful to Canyon Bakehouse for coming up with a tasty bread option for those of us who can't ingest normal bread.
If you want to learn more about Canyon Bakehouse or see what other products they offer, please go to their website, Canyon Bakehouse Gluten Free. For those of you in the States, you can probably find this bread in most of your grocery stores or you can check the list they have on their website. For us Canadians, it's a bit trickier. I have found it at Real Canadian Superstore and a local health food store called Joanne's Place, but haven't looked anywhere else. They also don't carry all the products Canyon Bakehouse offers. At the Superstore, they only have the 7-Grain and Rye breads for sale and at Joanne's Place they have the 7-Grain, Mountain White and hamburger buns.
If you do go to your local store looking for it, keep in mind that it will be in the frozen food aisle of the health foods section. It's usually with the other gluten-free products that they carry, so you'll have to look closely for it. If they don't carry it, you could always ask if they could order it. Never hurts to ask, right?
I highly recommend this bread to anyone who can't have gluten (or dairy/soy/corn/nuts). It does have eggs but other than that, it is pretty allergen friendly. Go and try it today! And if you do, let me know what you think.
