Operation Christmas Child

Every year our church hands out shoeboxes to be packed with gifts for children in other countries who don't get any gifts at Christmas. It is called Operation Christmas Child and Samaritans Purse is the organization behind it. If you would like more information, please check out their website here. <--- Click link

We have participated in past years but haven't for a couple years. Well this year I decided it was time to fill another shoebox. Or two.

Dan and I went to Walmart together last week and picked up items to go into two boxes, one for a boy and one for a girl. We chose the 5-9 age group and had fun picking out items.

We put in an assortment of games/toys, school supplies and hygiene items. I think we did a decent job choosing items that were both useful and fun.

Only problem was that our shoeboxes weren't actually full once we put everything in to them. Oops.

So back to Walmart we went and picked up some soap and t-shirts. This time, the boxes were full.

We wrote little notes to the kids on the back of a picture of us and put those into the boxes as well.

And that was it. Pretty easy right? Such a small gesture on our part can go such a long way for a child in another country. I'm glad that we decided to fill some shoeboxes this year and I hope we will next year too.

Have you ever filled a shoebox? Or at least heard of this program or something like it? I love to hear my readers experiences.

  1. Fun! It's been years since I filled a shoebox...

  2. Jackie - It brings me back to my youth and filling them with Pioneer Clubs. :)
